The Kessel Run

taken from the other thread which quotes the wookiepedia for explaining the kessel run. the wookiepedia description seems to have been adopted as canon, BUT was not the original explanation.

the original explanation, was that the Kessel was a starship to which the smuggler was to finish the run. the smuggler was supposed to leave a planet at the same time as the kessel, then go to a particular location to grab the merchendise, then intercept (catch up to) the kessel to deliver the goods. the faster the smuggler's ship could catch the kessel, the shorter the distance travelled by the kessel.

it would be like saying... "while driving my porshe, i caught the 60 mph train after it left the station in under 2 miles, while it took that ford pinto 20 miles to catch the train."

because both you and the target are moving.

basicly, when Han Solo said he made the run in under 12 parsecs... he meant that he caught up to the moving ship before it went 12 parsecs from the starting location.

i just can't remember where i read that. maybe in the original card game rulebook, in the histories it gave, but i'm not really sure. 'twas probably 20 years ago...
