Help me diagnose my computer problem

So for over 5 and a half years, my computer has been running like a champ.

It's got a cute little single core, 3 ghz processor. It's only got 1.5 gigs of ram and an old 512mb Nvidea card. But for such a low end computer, it packed a wallop. It ran this game on Ultra High, as long as I stay away from towns (in towns I have to bump it down to Medium or High.) It ran CoD World at War and MW2 just fine with the graphics turned up pretty high.

But as of a week ago, its lost some of its strength. One night I was playing Lotro the way I usually am, and the next day I was getting the most awful hitching I've ever seen. I logged off, restarted the computer, logged back on, and it was still there. Fearing for my computer, I started up MW2. It ran fine.

Then a few days later, MW2 started having the same problem. In fact, just about anything that requires much work to run is totally laggy.

And by laggy I mean it freezes for a split second, every 2 seconds. In Lotro, it takes my 10 seconds just to turn around. It takes me almost a minute to run from one bunker to the other in the 21st hall. It's like watching a slide show as my character takes a step, then freezes, then does it again over and over and over.

What's weird is, all my stuff loads really fast now. Lotro loading screens are about 20% faster than I'm used to. MW2 is fairly quick as well.

I've gone through and virus scanned and malware scanned my whole computer a couple of times, and there's nothing using up my resources that would slow down my games.

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?
