Undying title How to Guide

I first made this guide over 3 years ago and with the new forums it was lost. I see again people are getting frustrated with this title.

Let’s preface this Thread with the following. This title is only as important as your desire for it. No title shows anything other than that you have achieved some content. The Undying title simply shows that you reach lvl 20 without a defeat in combat. It does not express anything else, either positive or negative that that. No title gives you any special benefit from having it.

The vast majority of the games content is post lvl 20 so please people bare this in mind. 95% or more of the game is past level 20. So if getting the title is frustrating you then back away play your character still and try it again with an alt.

I have gotten this tile 8 or 9 times now. I can’t recall as I’ve been gone from the Lotro for a year now and the original thread is dead so I can’t double check. I have gotten the title with every class with the exception of the minstrel. Plus I got it with the Warden twice and a hunter I believe twice. So I speak with experience on how to get the title I also got the title before there were high level characters to give you an escort.

If you want to just have the title and don’t care how you got the title then get a high level character to escort you. If you want to earn the title then read the following guide.

Many people will attack you on the forums about how useless the title is. Ignore them, as all TITLES are useless and most of these people claim to have the title but either don’t or had someone escort them. You are here to get the title not justify to teenagers why you want the title.

One last point before we start the guide. Server issues, client crashes and all those other hardware and software issues are PART of the title. You have to deal with them just like everyone else who got the title has. Please note most lag issues are on the CLIENT end that means your puter is at fault and not the server. So if you are lagging lower your settings and kill programs running in the background. Other people are able to get the title multiple times with the same issues so it is possible.

1) You will fail full stop. You will make a mistake, get in over your head, or go afk where you think it’s safe and it’s not. Or you will suffer a power outage and client crash or get lag. The fact remains you will fail. Accept this and move on. There are no second chances with this title except a re-roll. You must be willing to accept this or you will just get frustrated and angry. I failed countless times when I first started. The first 5 characters I made all died in open beta then the next ones died in the first week of the launch. My first warden made it without a hitch my second I had to reroll twice. So even people you are experienced in the game will die getting the title. Accept this as part of the process.

2) Patience. Do not rush. Wait until your power and heath are at full before attacking the next mob. There is no title for speed. I died in the first 5 levels once getting the title the 5th time because I was trying to rush the starter zone and I mean the prologue starter zone before you enter the main world. Rushing isn’t worth it.

3) Food. Food gives you an in combat heal use it. Use the stat buff food and the health and power heal buff food. You are able to handle more with food than without food.

4) Learn the 50% rule. Every class is different in how many mobs you can handle and this changes as you level too. After a fight is over check your health bars know that if either your moral or power is at 50% then you can handle one more mob and have a REASONABLY good chance of winning. Assuming you make no major mistakes yet it’s not assured. It’s important to know because if you know your class can handle two mobs and end the fight with 50% moral then you can be reasonably assured you should be able to handle one more add. If you get two then you know that is a losing battle so get out right away not when you are almost dead. This guide will help you gauge when to run and when to fight. There is not shame in running when you are alone do so.

5) Use heals and health potions Early in the fight not as a last ditch. The timer to health potions are 2 minutes so if a health potion heals 50 hits and you took 60 hits then use the potion right away and then if the battle gets tough later you’ll have a greater chance of being able to use that second heal with the potion later in the fight. Saved me more than once.

6) Crafting, crafting, crafting! Make or buy critical level gear for your character, give them plenty of food and plenty of potions. Having purple gear through the entire life of your character to lvl 20 makes the title far easier. You will either have to Buy or make the gear yourself.

7) Don’t do instances. Many instances have no escape if you screw up which means you are dead. You can go back and do any instance you want to so you won’t be missing much.

8) Grouping. You can do a lot with groups that can make things easier in getting the title or harder. If you group up you have a responsibility to the group so before you start a quest research what quests you are doing and learn if this is a risk you want to take. Also do a few easy combat with the group to see how they play. Some players are frankly insane or bad players or unskilled. You don’t want them around when going for the title so leave the group. This said once you start on a quest you should not just bail because it is tougher than you expected. You shouldn’t abandon a group once you start on the main quest.

9) Do not display the lower titles on the undying title chain as some players will delight in pulling mobs into you. Some classes are more vulnerable to this like the champion with its AoE attacks. So don’t advertise you are going for the title.

10) Do not do quests that are lower significantly lower level then yourself. You should be doing white and DARK blue quests maybe some yellow if you are comfortable. These quests give you full xp rewards for completing them, while green and light blue quests give you ever decreasing rewards. Doing lower level quests means it will take more effort to level and thus you have to do more combat and you are thus more vulnerable to a client crash or hardware failure. So you might as well do quests that give you the most bang for your “buck.”

11) When you get to level 14 or 15 you should be thinking about moving to either the barrow downs or the lone lands for quests. Questing in zones/areas that are your level does two things 1) it gives decent xp rewards. 2) It teaches you how to use your character so when you DO and you will get into trouble you are more experience on how to save your butt.

12) Situational awareness. Be aware of that is around you at all times. Do not get too target focused that you don’t see the wandering elite coming towards you. Know your escape routes and be aware of mobs. In new zones areas you have no experience in be prepared for mobs to spawn right on top of you. You are new so you won’t know where mobs spawn and you don’t know if a group just out of sight ahead of you has cleared out an area. So be aware of your surroundings at all times.

13) READ the quest. Knowing EXACTLY what you need to do is important. So read the quest, so you know exactly what you have to do. And once you have done it go cash in the quest. Also it helps if you get all the quests in an area because many quests require you to kill the same creature giving you double or triple reward for one kill. Use fan sites to get info on quests in an area to help you out.

14) Traits. Trait up, traits increase many aspects of your character. Concentrate on ones that give you either in combat bonuses or stat bonuses or moral bonuses. At least once you get the title, my tank has no moral bonus traits equipped now but did so for the early levels. Think of virtues as a perma buffs.

15) Play when you are fresh. If you are tired or mad you are far more likely to screw up and die. Remember this is a game don’t let it aggravate you, relax. When you are tired stop playing or concentrate on other tasks like making gear or consumables.

16) Do not invest time into a character until you have the title. Spend as little time on the character outside of levelling until you have the title. This means don’t trait farm for EVERY trait in a zone. Only work on those traits you need to get the title. Once you have the title go back and farm traits. The less time you have investing in a character the less upset you will be if you die. Do not invest in crafting with this character if you have other characters that can craft this character’s needs. The exception is harvesting skills, it pays to harvest when you can. If you don’t have other crafter then do invest in crafting it is very important to have crit gear makes things so much easier.

17) Blue bonus xp. Only adventure with a character when you have it. Getting double the xp from kills is not small advantage. So take advantage of this, and adventure only when you have it. This mean being willing to set the character aside for a day or two.

18) Try to get the title with more than one alt at once. I did it with 4 alts at once and I was able to switch bad and forth with them which kept things interesting and it felt less like a chore. And allowed me to build up blue bonus xp easier.

19) Never go afk. Log out in a safe area then do what you have to do. Simple rule often ignored.

The title is just a title, I would say the undying title is the most difficult to get ONLY because there are no second chances. It is not a time consuming title to get there are ones that take far more time and there are titles that require more team work to get. However this is the only title that is a do or die (rather don’t die) mechanic. You with succeed or you don’t, all other title can be done over multiple tries. This said the undying title is not a very difficult title to get, no title is. The undying title is just utterly unforgiving.

Many people will tell you how to get the title and not have it or have gotten it once, take their advice with a grain of salt. I can show you 7 characters with the title on Elendilmir showing I can get the title multiple times some of these character are over 3 ½ years old too. I only mention this because I have seen far too many people given bad advice.

The key points I would like to stress are Do quests that are at or near you level. Yellow, white and DARK blue quests are your friend. Do not waste your time of weak lower level mobs and quests. A green mob can kill you if you lag or crash just as easily as a white mob so don’t spend twice or three times as long getting the title doing green and light blue quests. Crafted gear and consumables USE them. Take your time do not rush. Finally learn the rule of 50% and let it be your bible, there is no shame in running.
